Your bedroom is your haven – a place to relax at the end of the day and wake refreshed and ready to go. But did you know colour plays a role in how rested or energised you can be? Research has shown that colour has a clear effect on people’s mood and how they interact with a space. Pastel shades of blue and pink, alongside white, beige and grey are traditionally used in bedroom spaces, but brighter hues can lift your mood and bring an energy to the space. The authority in colour, Pantone, has chosen UltraViolet (Pantone 18-3838) as their colour of the year, a colour set to provoke imagination and clear thinking, even a little mystical. Last year was Greenery (Pantone 15-0343). Deep colours like royal blue, sapphire and eggplant add drama and sophistication, whereas green is calming and restful for a bedroom retreat.

Light plays an important role in your colour choice too. If the space is dark and low light, the colour choice will need to do some heavy lifting. Using white as a base is a good way to test living with a colourful bedroom. The white will balance out bright colours and also act as a canvas so you can switch up your space easily.

Be cautious when choosing colours in store – depending on the light levels in your space, a colour can perform differently when it’s on the walls or spread across your bed. It’s a good idea to paint a swatch first, and make sure you can return any furniture or soft furnishings in case the colour doesn’t work.

Colour Play

  • Paint a large test swatch on the wall.
  • Add colour pops with cushions, lights, artwork, bedside tables and linen.
  • Follow the theme out the window with colourful flower boxes and garden beds.
